This class project was to create awareness about victim blaming, particularly rape and sexual assault victims. The layers and lines of questions mimics the anxiety and fear that can come with such experiences. The idea of layering the levels of questions was inspired by a work by Jasper Johns of an American Flag. In this work he used clippings from American newspapers for the base, and then painted the stars and stripes over the top of it. This was a technique that challenged the viewer to look past such a well known image and look closer. I thought for this project it was important to incorporate this idea. The fact that sometimes it is necessary to look past our first impressions of something, or in this case someone, and understanding the underlying struggles to find the truth of that individual.
